Why Does A Lawyer Logo Always Consist Of A Balanced Weighing Scale?

Google ‘lawyer’s brand mark’ and you will see that every fourth other picture contains an image of a balanced weighing scale.

It may be a simple image of weighting scales that are balanced or an exotic image of a blind folded woman holding the scales; but the scales will be there. The design may be crafted like a silhouette or a photograph but the basic concepts are always somewhat similar.

So why is every other attorney trying to comprehend an image of the scales in their trademark design?

The strongest competitive advantage that a lawyer logo can play with is distinctness and if all the lawyers are using similar concepts and images in their brand mark then how will it be different from each other?

One of the main reasons why scales are used in businesses related to law and regulation is because a balanced weighing scale is known as justice and fairness which is one of the key features that any lawyer wants to depict with his business mark. This way he is assuring his potential customers of his honesty and integrity and is luring them towards him.

But would a customer really be attracted towards your law firm when he can see similar emblems everywhere on the street?

I highly doubt that.

To attract the customers, you need to create a symbol that is distinct from others yet has the same underlying effect.

One way to come up with a different trademark sign is to list down all the features that a good lawyer must possess. For example, a great lawyer must be honest, brave, just, possess integrity and sound knowledge related to his field.

Now take any one of those qualities and craft them in the form of an image. For example, you can create an abstract of a knight’s head and helmet to represent courage and justice. This will also give the emblem a traditional and historical look which will be appealing to the viewers.

You can also use an image of a lit torch to depict knowledge and wisdom or an illustration of a lion’s head to depict courage and strength. An eagle is also a popular choice to be depicted as a symbol of sharp sight and strength for professions.

Because law is one of the oldest professions ever, a touch of tradition and history will look quite appealing in a lawyer logo design.

For that you can use brown color prominently and intricately illustrated designs to give the emblem a delicate and traditional appeal.

In conclusion, if you are designing a brand mark related to law, then make sure that the emblem you craft is a true reflection of your profession but is distinct from others.

Is it Safe to Have Pet Rats and a Cat in the Same House?

A question I get asked a lot is whether it is possible for those who already own a cat to adopt pet rats. There are a number of factors to consider before making this decision. Whilst there are those few people who say that their cat poses no threat to their rodent pals and happily post pics of their cat and rat getting along well this is a very rare case and should not be treated as the norm.

I should point out at this stage that I live with my 2 pets rats, Pea and Mingles, my dog, Charlie, a Maltese x Shitzu and my cat, Dylan, a Ragdoll x Persian. All of my animals are rescues and they are all wonderful in different ways. However despite his Ragdoll bloodline, Dylan most definitely has the hunting instinct and I would never let the rats run around out of the rat cage whilst he is in the room. It is important to remember that even if you choose a gentle breed like a pure Ragdoll cat and have them from a kitten, they should still never be left out with your pet rats.

It is possible to keep pet rats if you have a cat, although you should weigh out the pros and cons before adopting your new pets. Here are some things to consider:

1. Separation – You will need to be able to easily separate your cat and rats when you want to let your rats out. This could mean using a spare room as a ratty room. This is what I do. The spare room is free from rat dangers like wires, sharp objects and small things they could choke on. It is also fully sealed. There are no little holes in the wall that the rats could escape from. I try to spend an hour a day in there with my rats. We can play together and I can do some training with them safely away from naughty cat claws and teeth. I also have a lot of fun tubes, boxes and even a rat swimming pool for them to explore. Cats are usually fine with this time out and as long as they have plenty of room to roam and their food, water and litter tray (and in our case a doggy companion) they will be fine.

2. Security – You will need to be 100% sure that your rat cage is secure. Of course you would need to do this anyway, because you wouldn’t want your rats to escape and get into danger. When we first adopted our two rats Pea and Mingles the old owners gave us their cage and it had a hole in. It was a small hole and I blocked it with plastic boxes and duct tape, but I had the scare of my life when I found Pea running around the floor with Dylan the cat about to pounce. Luckily I picked Pea up in time and the rats have since moved to a 100% safe (and huge!) cage, but please don’t let your pets get into this situation. Rats are notorious escape artists. You may think that the space is too small for them to squeeze out of, but they will surprise you. Make sure the rat cage is sturdy (cannot be knocked over) and that there are plenty of areas for the rats to hide from prying eyes.

3. Common Sense – You know your cat better than anyone, but even if you have the gentlest cat in the world who appears to want to be friends with your rats, please be very careful and never ever leave them unsupervised together. I can have my rats sit on my shoulder whilst Dylan is sitting next to me on the sofa, but if he is sitting on top of the sofa I am very careful. The rats’ tails are irresistible to most cats.

If you have a cat and you are willing to put in some extra effort to ensure the safety of your rats then there is no reason you shouldn’t have rodent pets. However, make sure that you have more than one rat. This is always best as the rats can keep each other company when they are in their rat cage. Even if you can spend a lot of time with your rat, when you are away, or asleep the rats can snuggle and play together and groom each other. It will make all the difference to their lives.

Rats may seem fearless at times, but if you have more than one cat, perhaps you should think about whether a rat is really a good pet for you and your family. Imagine how the rats will feel as all the cats investigate the cage and try to figure out ways to get in.

If you have decided to adopt some rats, be sure to take responsibility for their welfare. If you have a child who has begged you for rats they may learn some responsibility, but ultimately it is the adult who should ensure the animals’ welfare and make sure the cats do not pose a problem. It is also essential to ensure your cats are getting just as much attention as they used to, before the new additions.

I hope this article has helped you work out whether keeping rats and cats together could work for your family.

Good Luck!

Advantages of Collecting Rent Online

Due to very fast Wi-Fi and mobile apps available these days, people can go online to pay their bills and schedule their appointments. Renters also use such technology to pay on time and manage their funds. Handling payments from wherever you are (with no annoying paper checks) is the new standard. So, property owners like you should consider accepting online rent payment. It is beneficial to both your business and renters – it saves time, reduces costs, improves cash flow and is more convenient. There are five major advantages your property management business could profit from in letting your residents pay their rent online. Let’s see:

Reasons for Collecting Rent Online

Controls management costs

Collecting rent online reduces property management expenses. This allows you to cut down on operation costs, and lets property management fees remain low, which is definitely an advantage for property owners.

Improves customer service

Instead of collecting and processing paper checks, your team can spend more time focusing on their marketing efforts and improving the relations with the residents.

Lessens past due accounts

Since there are different online payment options – such as PaypPal, eCheck and credit card – there will be a considerable reduction in late payments. In addition, mobile alerts that remind the residents that the rent is due, or when the due date is drawing near, usually prompts an immediate payment when your system is mobile device optimized.

Adds more security

Paying rent online gets rid of the risks involved with cash payments. Moreover, your insurance company is more likely to reduce your coverage when you do not maintain cash on-site.

Makes dispute resolutions easier and makes an audit track

Online rent payments generate a digital paper trail. If ever a resident claims that he/she paid online, you can check the system at once to confirm or refute the claim. With a fully incorporated property management software package, you can update owner statements, evaluate late fees and automatically trail split payments. The processing of rent payments and owner disbursements are more secure since sensitive personal info is never compromised. Your accounting group can just click to get a snapshot of those who have or have not paid to allow well-informed financial resolutions.

Expectations of Residents when it comes to Online Rent Payment Portals

According to past surveys, residents often expect a lot from online payment options. Besides being accessible 24/7, they expect them to:

  • be user-friendly and simple to navigate;
  • come with itemized monthly statements that separate additional fees from services;
  • provide different payment options, such as credit and debit cards;
  • allow automated recurring payments;
  • not have any processing fees, particularly if residents are required to make online payments.

There are renters who still opt to pay their rent in the form of paper checks every first day of the month. However, in the last few years, it has been observed that more people are becoming comfortable with online transactions. In case you do not offer such options of paying rent online, perhaps it is about time to take it into consideration.

Is Your Business Social or Anti-Social?

If any of your customers use smart phones or the Internet, then you probably should be using social media to help get the word out about your business. Doing it and doing it well are two different things though. There are some pitfalls to avoid and some good rules of thumb to remember. You don’t want your business to accidentally come off as “anti-social.”

Here are some examples of ‘Anti-Social Behavior’ to avoid:

Not attending the function – AKA: Not keeping up with your posts and updates. There’s a sweet spot of about twice-a-day for posting to Facebook, and Twitter works best if you can be online all the time. Twitter is like an all day party, and Facebook is like your daily coffee break. If you plan on using either platform, you should approach your daily posts like that. Make sure your Facebook account is taking regular “coffee breaks” and chatting with its followers at least twice a day. Make sure you program or participate in tweeting all day long to keep your profile active and constantly connecting.

Being a Debbie-Downer – AKA: Posting the wrong content. What you want to post isn’t always what people want to see. Considering the two metaphors mentioned above (a coffee break and party), people tend to use social media when they’re looking to relax or network for business. Consider mixing up some fun and light-hearted content along with the more serious content you may have to post. Also, remember: Pictures! Pictures! Pictures! Our short attention spans tend to favor pictures versus long written posts.

Talking only about yourself – AKA: Doing too much self promotion. Yes, you are online to promote your business, but do you have to rub it in everyone’s face? Building your social media audience through non-promotional, informational, and funny posts is the best way to approach daily social media management. Your audience will be there when you need to make an announcement if you keep them interested. Consider committing to a 4-1 formula (non-promotional to promotional) when brainstorming what you want to talk about online.

Being too shy – AKA: Not participating in the conversation. It’s one thing to post on a regular basis. It’s another thing to actually get to know your online followers by participating in conversations with them online. A very small percentage of your followers are going to like, share, favorite, tag or comment on a post you make on behalf of your business. Of the very few that do, you must realize that they are probably your most loyal customers and most likely to refer business. To put it in Malcolm Gladwell language – these are your mavens.

Mavens are the people in social groups that others rely on to get information. They tend to be the friend you know that is always reading magazines and, nowadays, is online getting the latest and greatest information. If you have mavens commenting and sharing with you, jump in and keep the conversation with them rolling. They’re crucial to building your reputation.

The Cheap Go Kart: Under 100 Dollars And Hours Of Fun

Many of us are looking for the cheap alternative to a go kart because the prices of real go carts are so high. The cheap go carts that are available are similar to the small Razor which basically is a little electic go kart.

The overall design consists of a skateboard wheeled go kart flat frame. It has brakes and accelerator on the steering handle bars. It is a mix of bike parts and electric skateboard parts. Obviously being electrical it is rechargeable. However it really lacks the overall ability that most are looking for in a go kart: something that can bop around the yard. Because the ground clearance is very limited, the electric carts cannot go over lawns easily without getting caught on the grass and rocks.

Additionally, these small electric go karts have batteries that will burn out and they have limited battery life. So from year to year you end up spending close to 60 dollars on a new battery because it burnt out.

The Razor electric go kart seems to be on the surface a cheap answer. But when you probe through and start to see that actually the overall package is not really all that cheap.

What I’m proposing is the wood go kart. The wood go kart is the cheap alternative to the full blown metal framed go kart. The metal frame go kart has its place with exotic high strength materials and its ability to handle larger engines, more complicated steering systems, and disc brake systems, but the wood go kart can perform equally well if designed correctly as the metal counterpart.

The nice thing about a wood go kart is that all you really need are wood tools, which are easily gotten at any hardware store. You can make the wood go kart a weekend project or you make it last over several months using evenings as a bonding time. Depending on how “into” the go cart you are, you can make it last over the winter. It is a great winter project that can eat up those long dark evenings, which will have it in running order by spring time.

Another nice thing about the wood go kart is that it doesn’t need components that are very expensive such as chains, clutches and disc brakes. Granted the rubbing brake system used on the wood go kart is not the best go kart stopping device however it was used years and years and years prior to the introduction of the disc brake and the live axle on go carts in the vintage years.

The steering system can be complicated or simple. I personally, advocate the supported bogie system so that the bogie does not have so much flex to it. Some people have concerns about the bogie steering as not being as efficient as the Ackermann steering system. In reality the bogey style steering actually is more efficient and tracks better than the Ackermann. The Ackermann system is an approximation of an arc whereas the bogey style system is dead highly efficient.

The cheap go kart, which most are looking for, is easily made by yourself on a weekend or through a month’s span, using components that come off of basically a riding tractor. There are so many riding tractors out there that are being gotten rid of everyday. You could also go to an old junkyard where they fix lawnmowers and see if they will sell you rims and wheels for really cheap. Other cheap sources are Craig’s list and Free Cycle. You will be amazed at the stuff people are getting rid of, stuff that is great for a go kart. Everything you need for a wood go kart is available on the riding lawnmower..

You may be asking the question “Why not just use the riding lawnmower and be done with it?”

The reason why I don’t advocate using a riding lawnmower is that it actually is not simpler and is not stable. The riding lawnmower sits up higher that you want to sit making it unstable. The center of gravity is higher than is safe so the tendency for the riding tractor is that it will flip or rollover a lot easier than the lower center of gravity wood go kart.. Keeping the gravity center (or the line of action for the forces that go through go kart) lower keeps the go kart less able to flip. The way this is done is by widening the stance of the go kart and by lowering the rider position.

If you’re considering looking into a cheap go kart you may want to consider the father and son project or the father daughter wood go kart project as your next venture. It doesn’t cost you more than hundred dollars when it is all said and done. You will have hours of fun assembling, cutting, fabricating, and sewing on the wood go kart.

Build Family Connection Through This Family Craft Project

When’s the last time you sat down as a family and got your fingers sticky together?!

If your family goes to a regular religious service, you already have a lot of ceremony and ritual built into your life. These practices not only connect your kids to a greater power, they make them feel more connected to you. As you sit in physical proximity focused on a common uniting experience, your energies and body rhythms line up and match.

Have a Deliberate Plan for Connection

Families without the external structure of coming together have to be more purposeful about creating these experiences that will nourish your children’s sense of being woven into a part of the bigger whole that is your family.

Of course, playing a game or cooking a meal together as a family are wonderful ways to bond, but some children need something more concrete or visual. That’s why I love the idea of putting some time aside as a family to do a project that represents the family.

Here’s an idea you might try: Family Placemats

Purpose: To create a visual depiction of family memories and values; to have each family member contribute equally; to foster a positive view of both individual members and of the family as a whole.

1. Print out or draw multiple pictures of each family member (pets included!).

2. Create multiple sentence stems and have each family member fill them out:

Ex: What I love about our family is _________________________.

We are the kind of family that __________________________.

My favorite family memory is when ___________________.

Our family is special because we ________________________.

3. Brainstorm other symbols or images that represent your family. Perhaps you will print out pictures or maps of where your family comes from or what you love to do together.

4. Use markers to write the positive qualities of the family members in large print. Are there people in your family who are thoughtful? Funny? Disciplined? Creative? Hard working? Good problem solvers? Write those things down. Don’t attach names to them. In this case, we are de-emphasizing the traits of the individual and instead displaying what are the strengths this family team has together.

5. One you have a rich pile of materials, give each family member a placemat size piece of construction paper. Have each person take one item from the pile and glue it onto the placemat. Now hand each table mat clockwise to the next person. Again, each person will choose something from the pile to glue to the placemat. Once done, rotate again. Continue this process until each placemat is full and/or the pile of materials has been used up.

6. Once the glue has thoroughly dried, cover the placemats with clear contact paper or take them to your local copy shop and have them laminated.

Not only will this project allow for you to focus on what makes you unique as a family, but it will be an oasis of time when you are creating goodwill among you. Even more importantly, by working in the round-robin style, no one person feels ownership over the design of any one placemat. Each mat will reflect the developmental stages of your children and will be a mixture of more or less sophisticated efforts depending on their ages and personalities. (No perfectionism allowed here!) Because you have all had a hand in creating each one, when it comes to using them, family members will be delighted to get whichever one they happen to get.

Think this idea is too corny to do with your older kids? Think again! Make some excuse if you need to. Perhaps one of your children is entering high school-or even moving away to go to college or get a job. Tell your kids you want to mark this passage and have a way to daily remember the best part of being a family, even as kids grow up and outward. Teens might not admit to enjoying such a family project, but they will secretly treasure it and carry with them that warm fuzzy feeling of family love and connection.

One last rule! Ban electronics from the table while doing this project. The point is to come together as a family–not to each be checking Snapchat or Facebook. Your kids might grumble, but in the end they will be glad they have done it.

Happy Gluing!

Types of Online Games for Gaming Fun

Believe it or not, online gaming is the biggest thing today. Capitalizing on this huge market, app developers are constantly launching new games with the best graphics and highly engaging gameplay. Not just that, they design and create them in various formats to cater to a varied audience.

Now if you’re a diehard fan of online games, here’s a lowdown on the different genres; something you definitely need to know.

1. Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) – Gaming actually saw a spurt when it became social with the introduction of Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG). The thrill and adventure lies in competing with other players, playing simultaneously in the virtual world. They are called role playing games because you take up roles as you move through the game. Most of these are not free; you have to pay to access certain premium features or to level up.

2. Real time strategy – As the name suggests, real time strategy games call for an immediate response from the players; it is played in real time. They combine strategy and action and can be highly addictive. Real time strategy includes building the inventory by gathering resources, fighting armies, building base, creating units and exploring areas.

3. Action and adventure – They are set against a story in fantasy worlds or adventure lands. They are fast-paced and involve combats with enemies, puzzles, missions and quests. Completing successive missions result in the character leveling up and earning armor, weaponry, potions etc. Unlike MMORPG and real-time strategy formats, these are generally single-player ones.

4. Casino games – Casino games replicate the real world of the casinos on the World Wide Web. Many of these are played with real cash. It offers the excitement of playing in a casino. There are also real bonuses and prizes to be won.

5. Sports games – If you are a sports buff, sports games will grab your interest. The most popular ones on the web are football, basketball and baseball. They are organized into levels. You can choose to play along, against the computer or compete against another player. Many are modeled on actual sporting events.

6. Simulation games – Simulation games are real-life situations played out in game settings. Think about the number of farming games you’ve played, or that marvelous city you’ve built or the virtual people you’ve cared for, or the pet zoos you’ve managed. If you’re looking for action and adventure, simulation games do not fit the bill. They are about time management, strategy development, decision making. Nevertheless, simulation games promise you good time.

7. Shooting games – If you get a kick out of violent games, shooting games are the one for you. It involves shooting at targets be it objects, animals or people. These games require precision and skill.

In addition to the category of games mentioned above, there are arcade and board games, card games, strategy games and puzzles. Game developers are coming forth with various titles offering hours of unlimited fun and entertainment. Choose your favorite one and enjoy yourself.

Self-Conscious About Obesity? – Its Effect on Self-Esteem

Are you self-conscious about your weight?

Many people are very self-conscious about how they look and they don’t have to be.

Some folks just have a self-conscious nature.

You have to decide if you are truly self-conscious about being overweight or whether you just have a self-conscious nature.

Both can easily be fixed.

Before we begin this discussion regarding being overweight let’s take a moment to define what is meant my being self-conscious.

It is when you have an unpleasant feeling about being watched or observed by others.

Being self-conscious is when you do not want the attention you think you are attracting. Or at least the type of attention you think you are getting. Therein lies the true definition of being self-conscious. It is what you think or perceive. It may not be reality.

Remember that.

Are You Being Watched?

Do you think, “everyone is looking” at you? It may just be your imagination. Your self-image and self-esteem play a big role in how you imagine yourself in the eyes of other people.

Some people are naturally more self-conscious than others. Sometimes such feelings can go beyond just being shy and actually verge on being paranoid.

Being concerned about how you are seen by others when you are overweight can exaggerate these feelings. It is the same type of embarrassment you would experience if you suddenly found yourself in public without clothing.

It’s definitely going to make you uncomfortable and embarrassed.

And this phenomenon particularly occurs with overweight boys and overweight girls in their teenage years.

Being overly conscious of their bodies seems to be a phase teenagers go through. Being overweight is just another thing for teenagers to obsess over. However, these feeling from the teenage years can impact a person’s image of themselves well into their adult life.

Become Aware Of Small Things

Being self-conscious means you become acutely aware of even the smallest and most innocuous thing about yourself. Then you begin to obsess over it.

As it relates to your being overweight, you may think everyone is looking at you when you purchase a candy bar or go into a bakery. In this instance you may worry whether they are thinking, “Why does that fat girl/boy need that candy bar?” or some other silly notion.

Of course, it is only a silly notion to an uninvolved third party looking at the situation through their eyes in a detached manner. To the person purchasing that candy bar it becomes a serious issue fueling their self-conscious feelings.

A similar feeling may occur when a self-conscious person is eating in a restaurant. They may feel as though everyone is “looking” at them to see what and how much they are eating.

Don’t Be So Self-Centered

By the very definition of being self-conscious you are placing way too much emphasis on yourself. Being overweight only gives you a reason (in your own mind, at least) why people may be watching you and thinking unkind thoughts about you.

Unfortunately, when you are overly concerned about what you are doing and how your are doing it, you become nervous and make “mistakes.”

You drop items that clatter noisily to the floor.

You knock things over making a mess.

This only adds to your anxiety because now everyone (once again, in your own mind) has another reason to look at you and be critical.

It’s a negative situation that feeds upon itself making you feel worse about yourself with every passing moment.

Lose Weight – Decrease Your Self-Consciousness

An amazing thing happens when you lose weight.

You begin feeling better about yourself.

You experience improving self-confidence.

Your self-esteem skyrockets and you begin to feel good about your relationships.

And your self-conscious attitude dissolves.

Life becomes so much better for you.

You will begin wondering why it took so long to lose the weight that has been plaguing you for so many years. That is a great thing to happen.

What Color Is Your Golf Swing?

You may have noticed that at some golf courses the starter and will a point of asking, or sometimes sometimes suggesting that tee box golfers will be using during their round. With the growing popularity of golf and more golfers on many Niagara courses, you should soon expect to be advised about hiring from the proper tee boxes, but there is more to this trend than accommodating the masses.

Because slow play has become a concern for course managers and players alike, it only makes sense to take practical steps to speed up play and shorten the time it takes for a round of golf. There are many proven ways to speed up play, but reinforcing the use of the skills- appropriate tee boxes – be red, white, blue, gold or black – mightverywell be the simplest and most effective.

Slow play is not the only reason that every golfer should play the course at a length in keeping with their own abilities. Shorter hitters teeing fromt marks too far back will needlessly take more shots, encounter more hazards, incur more penalies, lose more balls, spend more time searching for balls, and require more time to complete their rounds. How much fun can that be? Scores balloon, handicaps soar and sandbaggers are born.

Here's the thing – many players automatically play the white tees, for example, without giving a thought to the length of the white course. That's a mistake. Here in Niagara, for instance, the white yards range from 6,494 yards at International (R & B nines) to 6,181 yards at the Links of Niagara at Willodell (about the Niagara average), and down to 5,312 yards at Water Park. A mid-handicapper may struggle with the length of one course off the whites but master a shorter course playing from the same set of tees.

Instead, each player should play from the tees that most closely correspond to their comfort zone. That may very well mean playing the whites at course A, the blues at course B, maybe even the blacks or reds at course C. Although it seems a good idea, there is no standardization of tee colors with corresponding course lengths. Course handicap and slope ratios are calculations intended to equalize courses based on their length, contours, hazards, greens, trees, etc. – on a scorecard or in a computer, not on the course!

Working at stretching your game a bit by playing something longer, more challenging courses or from tees a bit further back should not come at the expense of golfers playing behind you. While real improvements can only come en the course, the place to practice is the driving range. Choose a golf course that is in, keeping with your handicap, length off the tee, and the pace at which you play. By doing so, the game will be more enloyable. More clubs and shots will come into play, course management skills will improve, a round of golf will take a little less time, and friendly competitions and handicap play can be more properly conducted.
