Culture and Website Localization

Culture and Website Localization

With the rise in ownership of computers and internet usage growing daily, the internet is fast becoming the primary port of call for information, shopping and services. In addition, those computer and internet users are increasingly from non-English speaking countries. At the end of 2002, it was estimated that 32% of internet users were non-native English speakers. This figure is constantly rising. In response, businesses have quickly become aware of the benefits of website localization.

Website localization is the process of modifying an existing website to make it accessible, usable and culturally capable to a target audience. Website localization is a multi-layered process requiring both programming expertise and linguistic / cultural knowledge. If either is missing, the chances are that a localization project will encounter problems.

In the majority of cases it is the lack of linguistic and cultural input that lets a website localization project down. In order to give an insight into the impact culture has on website localization the following examples depict areas in which a solid understanding of the target culture is necessary.

Language in Website Localization

Translating a website from English into another language is not as simple as it may appear. There are numerous factors that have to be taken into consideration when translating a websites' content. Do all the words, phrases, sayings and metaphors translate directly to the target language? Would it be wise to translate the phrase "everyman for himself" in text describing a company or product if this is going to be read by a highly collectivist culture? Does the content of your website use humor and if so will the target culture appreciate or even understand it? Native alternatives should always be taken and used in any website localization.

When translating into another language carefully consider the variants. If it is to be an Arabic website then is aimed at Tunisians or Iraqis, Egyptians or Yemenis? If you are targeting all Arabic speakers then ensure Modern Standard Arabic has been employed by your translator.

One must analyze the style of the language and the target audience. If the audience is foreign business personnel, the vocabulary, grammar and punctuation must reflect this. If the audience is informal or you are orientated then a more relaxed language must used. Just as we in the UK would identify the difference between a site using 'posh English' and 'street English', other cultures will have the same perceptions of language. Using the wrong language for the wrong reader in your localization project will lead to a misunderstanding of the site or company.

It is essential to assess what information is necessary to carry over into the new site. Do not assume that all information on the English site is automatically transferred over. One must evaluate the target culture and society. Is it a culture that relations on information rich writing to fully understand a concept or product or is a culture that concerns more on images or one that needs little text to grasp ideas and concepts? If your English site employs a lot of technical language then consider how best to transfer these concepts without the use of language.

Pictures in Website Localization

Images carry many subcultural messages within them. These can speak volumes about your company or product. Pictures or images may have certain negative connotations that may repel viewers. This is now an area that thankfully is receiving attention in website localization.

For example, if a travel site in a Muslim populated country used pictures of scantily clad women in bikinis, disco dancing and beer drinking, the chances are that they would not be very successful.
When including pictures of personnel it is wise to tailor these to what the target audience will look positively upon. A picture of the Director behind a desk in an office will be fine for a seniority respecting society, but for an egalitarian society it is better to show the Director mixing with staff.

It is through pictures that websites can either relate to an audience or repel them.

Symbols in Website Localization

As with pictures, symbols can cause problems in localization. Icons using fingers such as an OK sign or V-sign may mean different things to different cultures. Our Western symbols do not always mean the same abroad. An ofc cited example is the representation of the house referring to a home page, or a letterbox to mail. The use of animals in logos can cause embarrassment and further problems. For example, pigs are considered unclean in the Middle East and cows as holy in India.

Colors in Website Localization

Colors are also loaded with cultural meanings that need to be analyzed in website localization. Choosing the wrong color for your logo or background will not always have catastrophic consequences, but avoiding them is always advisable. For example, in Japan white is commonly associated with mourning. In China red is auspicious. In Africa certain colors represent different tribes.

Navigation in Website Localization

It is even the most taken for granted aspects of website layout that must be analyzed properly for a successful localization project. In the West we assume that how we present websites is how it naturally should be done. This is far from the truth.

A common problem experienced in localization is the effect on layout through translation. Foreign scripts can make your pages need more room or less room depending on the target language in the localization. Not all languages read from left to right. Arabic is from right to left and both Japanese and Chinese are from top to bottom.

Access to certain pages is also a factor that can be considered as relevant. Highly hierarchical cultures may view a site positively if it is 'member only' access, whereas an egalitarian culture may find it disagreeable.

Content in Website Localization

Examining your written content in any localization process in critical to its success. This is not only important for proper transfer of aspects such as dates, currencies, and units of measurement but for the presenting the correct image.

For example, will the site focus on a product or a company? Both bring with them certain considerations depend on the target culture. If a company is marketing itself in a culture that respects seniority and hierarchy, readers will want to see information on senior members. Along with their titles and rank they will also want to evaluate them through information on their professional qualifications, experience and contacts. These areas in the UK may generally be avoided as in our culture it is bordering on self-indulgence and reflecting.

Conclusion

Culture affects everything we do, say, read, hear and think and even websites can not escape the influence of culture.

The impact of culture on website localization is huge. The few few examples are literally the tip of the iceberg. The number of variables that have to be taken into consideration requires the expertise of both a website designer along with a cross cultural communications consultant. In tandem they can identify the issues that will impact on the successful localization of a site.

At a time where the internet is entering more and more houses it is crucial that companies involved in the internationalization of their business consider website localization and take care to use effective cross cultural analysis.

Shy Around Men? Here's How To Stop Freezing Up When A Cute New Guy Talks To You

Can you talk to just about anyone, from the clerk at the store, to your best friend's boyfriend, but become shy around men that you like? Is it hard to start up a conversation when you meet a man you're attracted to? Would you like to be more confident around men instead of becoming embarrassed and tongue tied? If you're tired of being a wallflower and want to get involved in the dance, you need to learn a few techniques that can help you stop being shy around men.

Confidence Is Sexy

It can get pretty depressing and frustrating to be in this situation and if you tend to be a quiet introverted woman, you've probably suffered in the past. It's time to put all those bad feelings side and start living the life you want. But face it, if you do not talk to a man, it's going to be hard for him to get to know you, is not it?

You really need to focus on being more self-confident.

Being shy can lead you to feeling bad about yourself, especially if you're always thinking about it. But even the shyest woman has times when she is excited and involved in a conversation. It usually happens when she stops thinking about what to say and is doing something that has taken her mind off her self consciousness.

It does not matter what this was, when it happened or who you were with. It just matters that you think back and remember these times because you were not feeling shy during those times. That will build up your self confidence.

The Way You Look, The Way You Talk

There are a few other ways to build up your confidence. If you are self conscious about your appearance, you are not alone. Even outgoing women have doubts about how they look, at times. A good way to get past that is to wear a favorite top or the jeans that you love. If you feel good about what you're wearing, that will help. It's hard to feel good and shy at the same time.

But the biggest problem with being shy around men is being able to hold up your end of a conversation. The more you think about it, the more nervous you get, and the more nervous you feel, the more your shyness kicks in. Do not let it get to that point.

Go With A Group

If one to one conversations are your downfall, then stick to being part of a group. It's easier to add to a conversation than it is to be ready to respond to everything that's being said. In a one on one conversation, that's what happens. It's like playing tennis. When the ball is in your court, you have to return it to keep the game going. So do not spend time one on one with a man until you get to know him a bit better, so there are no drags in the conversation.

If he asks you out, do not drive yourself crazy worrying about what you're going to talk about. Instead suggest going to a movie, or attending a ball game, so there is less one on one face time.

Why not try a few of these ideas, so you can get out and enjoy life and stop being shy around men!

Want to learn about building dating confidence? Then I'd love to help!

Dreaming of a Dead Cat – Prophetic Dream Interpretations

So you dreamed of a dead cat and now you’re laced with worry, stressing about the possible meaning of your dream. You’re trembling. Your inner sanctuary is in shambles. You wonder, what could this mean?

To understand the cat dream you just had, you need to look at the dream from a unique perspective and ask yourself some fundamental questions.

What does a cat mean to you? Do you like cats at all? Or are you simply indifferent to them? What feeling goes through you whenever you see a cat? Do you automatically feel instant attraction?

The significance of a cat to you will help identify precisely what your dream means.

Let me give you an example of a cat dream I had.

The Dream:

I dreamed a dream overnight sometime in November of 2009. In my dream, I was in the backyard of a house. Evening time was at hand. I found myself swimming with a cat in the lake that was behind the house. Whose house this was, I do not know. But I swam in the lake with the cat right beside me.

Being human, I can obviously swim a lot faster than a cat ever can. So I swam at my regular pace but before long, there had been somewhat of a distance created between myself and this cat. I didn’t notice this immediately. When I looked back to check up on the cat, the cat had sunk to the bottom of the lake.

I hurried back to where the cat was and when I arrived there, the cat was at the bottom of the lake with its eyes wide open as if in horror. It wasn’t struggling like one would expect a drowned cat to, it just laid there frozen with its eyes staring back at me. I looked down at this cat and wondered if I should dive to the bottom of the lake to pull it out.

But I as pondered on this, I thought to myself, why even bother? I’m not a cat person at all. I have no attraction towards them. I consider them creepy creatures. They’re lazy and care only about themselves, unlike dogs. I’m more of a dog person. But in this dream, I was dreaming of a cat, an animal that I just didn’t care for.

After a few moments of reflection, I decided to leave the cat down at the bottom of the lake, then I swam out. However, upon getting out of the lake, I couldn’t walk away from it. I became immersed with doubt. I stood there on the side of the lake wrapped in thought. I still couldn’t stop thinking about the cat. I wondered if leaving it alone was the right decision. Should I go back for it and perform CPR? How ridiculous would that be? Do I even know how to perform CPR on an animal?

It was while I was contemplating my next move that I sprung awake from my dream.

Interpretation:

When I woke up from this dream, I was rather confused. I woke up with a steady heartbeat, unlike other times when I had had dreams that predicted ominous events. I was curious as to what this particular dream could mean. I was baffled by it but was not worried.

A few weeks after the dream, my girlfriend and I broke up abruptly. Now, this was an emotionally tumultuous period in my life. I loved the girl quite dearly, but deep in my heart, I always kind of knew she wasn’t the type of woman a man like myself should take seriously.

The breakup was devastating nevertheless. The emotional pain I felt was tremendously horrendous. My soul was troubled. I wrestled with many undignified schemes of some form of reconciliation and while I implemented some of them, none of them brought me closer to my hearts desire. With hands heavy from tears, I reached out hoping for a better tomorrow but it never came, at least not fast as I wanted it to.

As time passed, however, a stark realization began to dawn on me. I knew I was better off without this girl because of certain questionable characteristics she had that I had tried sweeping under the rug. She loved partying too much, never liked staying in the house, got bored rather easily, was always on the go, cared only about herself (classic trait of a cat), was very combative and didn’t seem to understand that tiffs between couples should be short-lived. Before the breakup, I ignored all these glaring signs for reasons that I’m sure some of you can imagine. I was emotionally attached.

A few months after the breakup. We got back together. But like water and oil, we separated again shortly there after. I loved the girl, this I won’t deny. However, her behavioral characteristics were simply not conducive to a harmonious relationship. Thus, in the interest of my happiness, as opposed to the relentless downpour of poignant melancholic feelings I’d been battling with, I opted to leave her alone… for good!

It was painful, and I doubted the decision, but I knew it was for the greater good. Even if she were to beg me to take her back, I might entertain the idea, but I would eventually renege on advancing her to be a permanent companion. Contrary to popular belief, I know people don’t change. They may alter certain characteristics of themselves, but their overall personality, moral values, beliefs will remain the same.

Now, let us look at the symbols of this dream.

Symbolism

Lake = The lake in this dream is the relationship between myself and my ex.

Swimming = The act of swimming in this lake denotes the attempts of her and I to be in a relationship together.

Capability = The fact that I swam faster than her to the point where she was left behind meant that in this relationship, I had more to give than she did. She did not have it in her to be the same caring, considerate, selfless person that I am.

In other words, in the relationship lake we were in, I swam and went further than the cat because, as with the real life relationship which the dream was an allegory of, I was the more powerful one. I was the one with the ability to do more.

In the dream, I swam with a purpose. Although I didn’t have a destination in mind, I swam as if I did. She didn’t, so she gave up when she couldn’t keep up with my dedication to the relationship.

Lesson:

See, if you have a dream about a dead cat, stop thinking dream dictionaries can help you. As you can see from the above situation, a prophetic dream is always unique to the individual who had it. Always remember that. What significance does a cat hold to you? Answer that question, and you’ll unlock the mystery of your dream!

Four Basic Types of Credit

When people think about credit, they generally only think about loans. However there are four basic types of credit you should know about. These include service credit, loans, installment credit and credit cards.

Service loans are those associated with services like electric, cable, water, gas, telephone and the like. For some of these you have to pay a deposit, especially if you have bad credit. Having good credit can sometimes eliminate the deposit completely because the companies lending the service have confidence in your ability to pay.

Loans are types of credit that lend us cash. The loans can be for small things or little things. Loans can be secured or unsecured. Secured means you put up some collateral to support the loan if you default. Most times these types of loans are given through banks.

Installment loans are types of credit that means you pay for something over time. You usually agree to make a down payment and sign a contract as to the amount you will pay each month. Payments are usually equal for the months during the term of the loan, which can vary. The item that you purchase is the security behind the loan. If you default, the item that you purchase is by default the lenders.

Credit cards are on of the most popular and most convenient types of credit. They are given by various types of businesses and are usually backed by a bank. You may have credit cards from retail stores, banks, or other businesses such as a gasoline company.

Whichever type of credit you use, the main thing to remember is that each has its drawbacks and benefits. You should use all of them wisely and make your payments on time to avoid any negative consequences.

RV Spring Preparation Checklist

Your RV has been sitting idle over the winter. Now the early signs of spring are here and it’s time to take it out of storage and prepare the coach and chassis for this years camping season. If you’re like me, you want to have some type of logical sequence to follow rather then haphazardly checking the unit out. I made a simple checklist to use so that nothing is overlooked. I prefer to do the majority of spring preparation myself. If you’re more comfortable having someone else do it you can schedule an appointment with a reputable RV service center to have it done.

* Depending on how your unit was winterized it will need to be de-winterized. If you used non-toxic RV antifreeze you need to run fresh water through the entire system until all traces of antifreeze are gone. To remove it from the 12-volt water pump add water to the fresh water-holding tank, turn the pump on and open all water faucets. When the antifreeze is out of the system turn the pump off and take the water heater out of the by-pass mode (if applicable). Re-install any water filter cartridges you removed for storage.

* At this point I like to sanitize the water system. Make sure all of the drains are closed and drain plugs are installed. Take a quarter cup of household bleach for every fifteen gallons of water your fresh water tank holds. Mix the bleach with water into a one-gallon container and pour it into the fresh water holding tank. Fill the fresh water holding tank completely full of water. Turn the water pump on and open all faucets, run water until you smell the bleach. Close the faucets and let it sit for at least twelve hours. Drain all of the water and re-fill the tank with fresh water. Turn the pump on and open all faucets until you no longer smell bleach. It may be necessary to repeat this process to eliminate all signs of the bleach.

* With the water system under pressure inspect for water leaks. Check the operation of the toilet.

* Wash the unit thoroughly. This is a good time to inspect the roof and body seams, and window sealants for cracking that would allow water to get in. Consult a dealer for sealants compatible with these materials.

* Inspect the operation of the awning and clean the awning fabric as required.

* Inspect the tires for signs of dry rot. Inflate all tires to the recommended COLD tire pressure.

* Lubricate all hinges and locks with spray lubricant.

* Remove any tape or protective covering you may have put over LP gas vents to keep insects and rodents out. Check any mousetraps you may have put out. Open all doors and compartments and check for rodent intrusion and water damage.

* Inspect and clean the interior.

* Plug in any appliances that you unplugged for storage and replace any dry cell batteries you may have removed. This is a good time to put new batteries in items like smoke alarms.

* Test the operation of the carbon monoxide alarm, LP gas leak detector and smoke alarm.

* Check the fire extinguisher. Be sure it is fully charged.

* Reset any breakers you may have turned off. If you removed any fuses for storage re-install them.

* Clean or replace air conditioner filters if it wasn’t done prior to storage and remove any covers that were put over air conditioners.

* Open vents and windows and air the unit out.

* If you removed the coach and chassis batteries for storage install them. Whether they were removed or not check the electrolyte levels, clean the terminals and clamps, and check the charge level in all batteries. Recharge batteries as necessary.

* Check the operation of the electric steps if applicable. Lubricate step mechanism.

* Test the operation of the hydraulic jacks if applicable. Check hydraulic fluid level.

* Test the operation of the back up camera and monitor if applicable.

* If you didn’t change the oil and filters in the generator prior to storage this is a good time to do it. Inspect the generator exhaust system for damage prior to starting. Start and run the generator for two hours with at least a half rated load on it. Consult the generators owner manual for load ratings.

* Turn the generator off and plug the unit into shore power. Turn the refrigerator on in the electric mode. Allow sufficient time to cool and check for proper operation.

* Check all 12-volt interior lights and accessories.

* Test the monitor panel for proper operation.

* Check the operation of slide outs if applicable.

* Check the remaining 120-volt appliances for proper operation.

* Test the Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) for proper operation.

* Turn the refrigerator off, leave the doors open and allow sufficient time for it to get to room temperature so it can be checked in the gas mode.

* Before I use the LP gas system I have a leak test and gas operating pressure test preformed. A qualified technician with the proper equipment should do these tests.

* After this is accomplished turn the LP gas valve on and check the operation of all LP gas appliances. Be sure the water heater is full of water before testing the water heater. If a gas appliance is not operating properly have it inspected by a qualified technician. Insects are attracted to the odorant added to LP gas and build nests that can affect the appliance from operating properly.

* If your unit was in long-term storage and you didn’t change the engine oil and filter prior to storage this would be a good time to do it.

* Check all fluid levels in transmission, power steering, engine coolant, engine oil, windshield washer and brakes. Consult vehicle owners manual.

* Start the engine and check for proper readings on all gauges. Check for proper operation of dash air conditioner.

* Perform a complete chassis lubrication if it wasn’t done prior to storage.

* Check the condition of windshield wiper blades and replace them if necessary.

* Check the operation of all chassis lights.

* Make sure the vehicle emissions/inspection sticker is up to date.

* In addition to this if you have a pop-up or travel trailer the wheel bearings and brakes (if equipped) should be inspected at least once annually. Inspect any canvas for dry rot and tears; inspect all hitch work and the coupler for damage. Inspect the breakaway switch and pigtail for proper operation.

Happy Camping ,

Black Cat Superstition – Good Luck Or Bad Luck?

Depending in where you come from in the world having a black cat cross your path can either be bad luck or good luck.

Traditionally black cats are associated with Witches and evil, which often gives them the stigma of being bad luck.

However, luck is what you make it. If a black cat crosses your path, and you are so busy looking at the cat you do no do see the curb stone at the edge of the road, and you fall over it injuring your arm, then you are most likely to consider a black cat bad luck. On the other hand, if you have a black cat cross your path, and next to it is a ten dollar bill that some one has dropped and you pick it up, then you will consider the back cat to be good luck.

What ever your first experience was with a black cat, which will make the decision as to whether the black cat is good or bad luck for you.

Pure black cats are actually quite a rare thing. Often they will have little specks of other colors in their coats or on their paws. And very often if there a pure back cat has been bred with a tabby cat at some time in the cats ancestor the cat will appear to be black, however when the light is right you will be able to see the tabby markings very faintly on the coat.

The true black cat is the Bombay cat, which is an Asian cat and is completely black. This cat originates from Burmese cats and has a pure black coat, paws and nose with copper and green eyes. The Bombay black cat of Asian origin should not be confused with the American cat of the same name, which is a newer breed of cat originating in 1958.

So are black cats good or bad luck? They could be either. Next time you see a black cat, make sure you are alert so nothing bad will happen and perhaps something good will instead!

How To Find Age Appropriate Toys For Children

Fond memories of childhood usually bring to mind a favorite toy. A cuddly doll, colorful crayons, or a special wagon are all child favorites. Toys bring a great deal of joy to children, but they also can be valuable learning tools. Exploring, pretending, and sharing are just a few of the important skills children develop while they play. Toys do not have to be expensive. Cardboard boxes in the backyard and measuring cups in the bathtub are favorite standards. But parents who do wish to purchase toys may find it helpful to know what toys to choose and which to avoid for children of different ages.

Infants and Toddlers – Every child is unique, has its specific pattern of development and has different ways of cruising through the millions of physical, mental and social development. Infants and toddlers learn about the world through their senses. They are interested in the sight, sound, smell, texture, and taste of things. Objects or toys that can be squeezed, dropped, poked, twisted, or thrown are sure to cause delight. Toddlers also enjoy any item that can be stacked, scattered, opened, closed, pushed, or rolled. Toys are vital for the physical and mental development of your infant baby. The toys have a significant bearing on your infant's personality, therefore must be carefully selected.

Preschoolers – During these years, children use their imagination to imitate adult activity and participate actively in physical games. Their physical coordination developments, and the foundation of printing and writing is also laid at this time. Preschool children learn by doing. They are busy developing new skills. They like drawing, painting, and building. They also spend a great deal of time pretending. Dress-up clothes, pretend play and puppets are big favorites. Preschoolers are energetic and active. They need large balls to roll and throw, wagons to pull, and tricycles to ride.

School-age Children – At this stage child learn about getting along with others, and about the adult world of sports, games and careers. They develop intellectual and social interests and make strong friendships, likes and dislikes. School-age children feel more grown-up and love activities that lead to "real products" such as jewelry, "designer" T-shirts, or stamp collections. They also develop a keen interest in sports and enjoy having adult-like physical equipment such as softball gloves, tennis racks, or skates. They have a better understanding of rules and enjoy playing with others. Board games, cards, or dominoes teach math concepts and problem-solving skills.

The age of your child and not the activity level, is a primary factor in selecting an appropriate educational learning toys . Toys should not promote a single thought or concept; Instead, they should enhance creativity and thinking skills. Toys and games are also important for the child to learn and practice logical and problem-solving. Toys that can be played in a number of ways serve as great educational tools and endorse comprehensive development of your child.
